A Dichroic Glass Buying Guide for Fusers

Dichroic glass can make a small focal piece do an extraordinary amount of visual work. Tilt it and the colour changes. Place it over black and it may look entirely different from the same piece over white. Fire it, cap it or leave it exposed, and the result changes again. This dichroic glass buying guide is designed to help you choose material that suits your kiln work, budget and intended finish - before you start cutting precious pieces.

Start with the effect you want

Dichroic glass is clear or coloured glass with an extremely thin metallic-oxide coating applied in a vacuum chamber. The coating reflects some wavelengths of light while transmitting others, which creates its familiar colour-shifting, luminous appearance. It is not simply a coloured glass, and it should be selected for more than its headline colour.

Before choosing a sheet or pack, decide what job the dichroic will do in the finished work. For jewellery, small cabochons and pendants, you may want a crisp pattern that remains visible through a clear cap. For a platter or panel, a restrained texture or a narrow accent can be more effective than a large, highly patterned area. In a mosaic, consider whether the changing reflection will support the surrounding colours or compete with them.

Look at both the reflected colour and the transmitted colour. Reflected colour is what you see when light bounces off the coating. Transmitted colour is what appears when light passes through it. A piece that looks electric blue from the front may show a warm amber or pink cast in transmission. That contrast is part of the appeal, but it can be a surprise if you are matching a carefully planned palette.

Dichroic glass buying guide: choose the right form

Dichroic is available in several forms, and the most useful choice depends on how you work. Full sheets provide flexibility for larger work, repeated motifs and efficient cutting from a known design. They are also the better value when a particular pattern is central to a series.

Small sheets, offcuts and assortments suit jewellery makers, beginners and anyone building a varied colour library. They let you test combinations without committing to a full sheet, although an assortment may not provide enough of one pattern for matching pairs or production work. If you make earrings, buy enough material from the same sheet for both pieces. Colour and pattern placement can vary across a sheet.

Dichroic strips, shapes and small elements are useful for controlled accents. They can save time, especially where intricate cutting is not the point of the design. The trade-off is less freedom over scale and pattern direction.

Also consider the base glass. Dichroic can be applied to clear, black, coloured, textured or patterned substrates. Clear-backed material often gives brightness and depth when layered. Black-backed dichroic can produce a strong, dense reflective effect with fewer layers. Textured bases add movement, but the texture may distort a pattern and make a precise design less predictable.

Pattern scale matters

A pattern that looks spectacular on a full sheet can disappear in a 15 mm pendant. Conversely, a fine pattern may read as visual noise across a large bowl. Check the scale of the pattern against the size of your finished components, not just the size of the glass you intend to buy.

Direction is equally important. Stripes, ripples and geometric patterns may need to run consistently across a pair of earrings or a set of tiles. Allow extra glass for positioning and cutting rather than assuming every section of a sheet will work.

Match COE and test compatibility

For kiln-forming work, compatibility comes before colour. Dichroic glass is commonly offered on compatible glass systems, such as COE 90 or COE 96. Your dichroic must match the glass system used for the rest of the project, including base glass, caps, stringers, frit and any other inclusions intended to fuse permanently.

COE is a useful starting point, not a complete compatibility guarantee. Two glasses with the same stated COE are not automatically suitable for every firing situation, particularly when materials come from different manufacturers or have not been tested as a system. Use products identified for the same compatible range, and test unfamiliar combinations before committing them to a larger piece or a customer order.

If you work in more than one glass system, label and store your dichroic separately from the moment it enters the studio. A clearly marked shelf or tray is much cheaper than discovering a compatibility crack days after annealing. Keep the original product label where possible, especially for small offcuts that can become impossible to identify later.

For leadlighting or copper foil work, COE is generally not the deciding issue because the glass is not being fused. Instead, consider thickness, cut quality, the way the surface reads in ambient light and whether the coating will be protected in the final construction. Dichroic can be a striking feature in a sun catcher or panel, but a whole panel made from high-reflective glass may overwhelm the design.

Decide whether to cap it

Capping means placing a layer of compatible clear glass over the dichroic coating before firing. It is a common choice for jewellery and functional ware because it protects the coating from scratches, wear and cleaning. It can also add depth, soften sharp surface texture and make the finished piece more comfortable to handle.

The trade-off is that a cap changes the look. Some patterns become deeper and more luminous; others lose a little crispness or shift in colour. Bubbles can also form if glass is poorly cleaned, layers are uneven, or the firing schedule is too aggressive for the construction. A small test firing with your preferred clear glass is worthwhile, particularly when using a new pattern.

Uncapped dichroic retains a more immediate, reflective surface. It can be effective on decorative work that will not receive frequent handling, but the coating is more vulnerable. Consider its placement carefully. A raised, exposed surface on a coaster, jewellery item or frequently handled bowl is unlikely to remain pristine.

Some makers use dichroic face-down against a clear base to protect the coating without adding a full cap. This can create a beautifully glossy result, but it reverses the viewing relationship and may alter the pattern substantially. Test first, especially with directional designs and transparent substrates.

Plan for cutting, handling and waste

Dichroic is a premium material, so cutting decisions matter. Inspect the sheet before marking it, identify the coated side and plan the direction of any pattern. Keep hands clean and dry, and avoid dragging the coated face over abrasive work surfaces. Fine scratches may be far more visible once the glass is fired or viewed under strong light.

Cutting practice varies with the substrate, coating and manufacturer instructions. In many cases, makers prefer to score from the uncoated glass side where practical, but it is best to follow the product guidance and make a trial cut from an offcut. Do not assume that the same pressure or cutter setting you use for every cathedral or opalescent glass will suit coated glass.

Buy with realistic allowance for waste. You will need room for straightening an edge, avoiding an awkward section of pattern, matching a pair, and testing a new firing approach. For a one-off pendant, a small assortment may be ideal. For a class, commission or repeatable range, a larger matching sheet usually provides better consistency and fewer design compromises.

Consider firing behaviour, not just the catalogue photo

A product image is a useful guide, but dichroic changes under kiln heat. Full-fuse, tack-fuse and slumping schedules can all affect the surface, apparent depth and intensity of a pattern. The surrounding glass matters too: clear, white, black and transparent coloured bases can produce very different results from the same dichroic element.

Keep a firing record for each test. Note the glass system, dichroic pattern, orientation, whether it was capped, the firing schedule and the final appearance. A simple sample board can become one of the most useful tools in a working studio, particularly when you need to repeat a result months later.

Avoid treating dichroic as a substitute for good composition. Its reflective quality draws the eye immediately, so use it with intent. A small band, a carefully placed fragment or a single patterned centre can give a design more authority than covering every available surface.

Buy for the project, then build a useful palette

For your first purchase, choose a small selection with clear roles: one bright pattern for focal points, one darker or black-backed option for contrast, one fine texture for smaller jewellery, and a compatible clear glass for capping and testing. This gives you practical range without leaving you with a drawer full of unrelated offcuts.

As your work develops, buy more deliberately. Keep notes on the colours that sell, the patterns that suit your preferred scale, and the combinations that behave well in your kiln.
