A successful first firing is usually decided before the kiln is switched on. Glass fusing rewards careful material choices, clean preparation and patience with the firing schedule. This beginner guide to glass fusing will help you understand the essentials, so your first coasters, pendants or small dishes have the best chance of coming out clean, flat and intact.

Glass fusing is the process of heating compatible pieces of glass in a kiln until they join together. At a lower temperature the pieces soften and retain some texture, known as tack fusing. At a higher temperature they melt into a smoother, more level surface, known as full fusing. The same basic materials can produce very different results depending on heatwork - the combination of temperature and time in the kiln.

Start with compatible glass

The most important rule in fused glass is simple: use glass made to fuse together. Compatibility is commonly identified by coefficient of expansion, or COE. This is a measure of how much a glass expands when heated and contracts as it cools.

For most beginners, choosing one compatible system and staying within it makes the process far more reliable. Bullseye is COE 90, while Oceanside Compatible is generally COE 96. These glass families should not be mixed in the same fused piece, even if the colours appear similar or the sheets are both labelled art glass. Their rates of expansion differ enough to create internal stress, which may cause cracking during cooling or days later.

Not every glass sold for stained glass or leadlighting is suitable for kiln forming. Cathedral, textured and handmade sheet glass can be beautiful in panels, but unless it is specifically rated for fusing, it is not a safe choice for a fused project. When in doubt, keep it for a copper foil, leadlight or mosaic project and choose tested compatible glass for the kiln.

Compatibility also applies to accessories. Frit, powder, stringers, confetti and dichroic glass should be selected in the same COE family as your base glass. Read labels carefully and keep offcuts sorted by system. A small piece of unknown glass is rarely worth risking an otherwise successful firing.

Beginner guide to glass fusing: essential equipment

You do not need a large studio to begin, but you do need the right equipment. A small kiln with a reliable controller is ideal for learning, as it allows you to work through simple firings without filling a large shelf. The controller matters because glass needs controlled heating and cooling, rather than a basic on-off heat source.

You will also need a kiln shelf, kiln wash or kiln paper, a glass cutter, running pliers, grozing pliers, a cutting surface and safety glasses. Kiln paper is particularly useful for early projects because it gives a clean separator between the glass and shelf. Follow the product instructions for the paper and shelf preparation you use. A piece that sticks to the shelf is disappointing, and often avoidable.

A respirator suitable for fine particulates is sensible when handling glass powders or cleaning dry kiln wash. Good ventilation and a tidy bench also make a real difference. Glass splinters are small, sharp and remarkably good at finding hands, footwear and workbenches. Sweep rather than brush fragments from clothing, and keep food and drink away from the cutting area.

Choose a first project that teaches the basics

A small flat piece is the best place to start. A coaster-sized square, a simple pendant or a pair of small earrings lets you learn cutting, layering and firing without the extra variables of moulds and slumping.

Begin with a base layer of 3 mm compatible sheet glass and add a few carefully chosen design elements. You might use two colours of sheet glass, a line of stringers, or a small amount of frit. Keep the total build relatively even across the surface. Thick piles of glass next to bare areas can create uneven flow and may leave an irregular edge after full fusing.

Clean every piece before assembly. Fingerprints, dust and cutting oil can show as marks or scum after firing, particularly on pale or transparent glass. A wipe with clean water and a lint-free cloth is often enough for ordinary sheet glass. Handle cleaned pieces by the edges where possible.

Lay out your design on kiln paper or a prepared shelf, allowing room around each piece. Glass spreads as it reaches a full fuse. As a general guide, a two-layer piece made from 3 mm glass will usually become wider and slightly thinner after firing. This is useful when planning a final shape, but it also means components placed close together can merge unexpectedly.

Understand the firing cycle

A firing schedule is not a universal recipe. Kiln size, element placement, load size, glass type and the thickness of the work all affect the result. Use the firing advice supplied by the glass manufacturer as your starting point, then keep notes on what your own kiln does.

A typical firing has several stages: a controlled heat-up, a hold at the process temperature, cooling, an annealing soak and a gradual descent through the strain range. The annealing stage is where the glass relaxes internal stress. Skipping it, or cooling too quickly afterwards, can leave a piece vulnerable even if it looks fine when it first comes out.

For a first flat project, follow a tested tack-fuse or full-fuse schedule for your chosen glass system. A tack fuse preserves the outline of layered pieces and gives texture, while a full fuse creates a smoother surface and more rounded edges. Neither is inherently better. A tack fuse suits graphic designs, while a full fuse is often preferred for smooth jewellery components and pieces intended for a second slump firing.

Do not rush to open the kiln. Glass can crack from thermal shock if cool room air reaches it too early. Wait until the kiln has cooled to the temperature recommended by the glass manufacturer before lifting the lid. The hardest part of fusing for many new makers is learning that the kiln keeps doing its work after the controller has finished its programme.

Common first-firing problems

Devitrification is a cloudy, dull or scummy surface that can appear on some glasses. It may be caused by contamination, excessive time at high temperatures, repeated firings or a glass type that is more prone to surface change. Clean glass, an appropriate schedule and limiting unnecessary heatwork will help. Some designs and glass colours are simply more susceptible, so test pieces are worthwhile.

Sharp edges usually mean the piece has received insufficient heatwork for the finish you wanted. If you intended a tack fuse, that may be exactly right. If you wanted a fully rounded edge, a slightly hotter or longer full-fuse hold may be needed. Change one part of a schedule at a time, rather than adjusting everything at once.

Cracks are more serious. A crack that appears during or after cooling can point to incompatible materials, insufficient annealing or cooling too quickly for the thickness of the piece. Check the glass system first, especially if you used an unlabelled scrap, decorative inclusion or different brand of frit. Then review the annealing and cooling section of your schedule.

Bubbles are normal in some fused work, particularly where layers trap air. A small bubble can add character; a large trapped bubble can distort a design. Avoid sealing a pocket of air beneath a solid top layer, and consider whether a slower early heat-up or a bubble-squeeze stage is appropriate as your work becomes more complex.

Keep records and make test tiles

Glass fusing becomes much easier when you treat each firing as useful information. Record the glass brand and COE, colours used, number of layers, shelf preparation, programme, kiln load and result. A notebook beside the kiln is more useful than relying on memory after several firings.

Test tiles are especially valuable for reactive glass combinations, powders, unusual inclusions and new firing finishes. A small test can show colour shifts, spreading, texture and compatibility before you commit a larger sheet of glass to a design. This practical habit saves material and builds confidence quickly.
