A panel can look simple on paper, then become difficult the moment the glass, construction method and materials are not working together. Choosing stained glass supplies well is not about buying the largest tool kit or the brightest sheet in the rack. It is about matching each material to the way you plan to make the work - traditional leadlighting, copper foil, kiln-formed glass, mosaics, or a combination of techniques.

Start with the construction method

Traditional leadlighting
Leadlighting is built around lead came. The glass sits in channels within the came, the joints are soldered, and cement is worked into the completed panel to make it firm and weather-resistant. It remains an excellent method for larger panels, doors, sidelights and traditional decorative work.

Bullseye 90 and Oceanside Compatible 96 are each formulated systems, but they should not be mixed in the same fused piece unless a manufacturer specifically confirms compatibility.
It is also worth remembering that matching COE alone does not guarantee a successful firing. Glass thickness, firing schedule, inclusions, layering and cooling all affect the outcome. Keep manufacturer systems together where possible, record your schedules, and test unfamiliar combinations before committing to a larger piece.
Choosing sheet glass for the result you want
Sheet glass is the heart of most stained glass work, and its surface is as important as its colour. Cathedral glass is translucent and allows light through cleanly, making it useful for colour-led designs and windows where brightness matters. Opalescent glass diffuses the light, creating softer colour and stronger privacy. Streaky, wispy and mottled glasses add movement, while heavily textured sheets can become a major design feature in their own right.
Think about the panel in its actual setting. A deep blue cathedral glass may appear luminous in a sunny north-facing window but can look nearly black in a dim hallway. An opaque or heavily opalescent glass can provide welcome privacy in a bathroom, though too much of it may make a small space feel closed in.
Texture also affects cutting. Some textured and handmade glasses have a preferred cutting direction, while very uneven surfaces need patient scoring and controlled pressure. If a design includes tight curves or tiny pieces, consider whether that spectacular texture is practical for the pattern. Sometimes a quieter glass gives the better result because the linework remains clear.

Patina changes the appearance of a completed copper foil piece, but it will only take evenly when solder seams are thoroughly cleaned. Black and copper finishes can highlight the construction lines beautifully, while natural silver solder suits a crisp, contemporary look. The best choice depends on the glass, the setting and whether you want the seam to recede or become part of the design.
Buy for the project, then build your range
Beginners are often tempted by assorted offcuts and bargain packs. They are useful for practising cuts, making small sun catchers or mosaic work, but they can make a first patterned panel harder if there is not enough of any one glass. Experienced makers can take a more flexible approach, building a studio stock of reliable clear textures, neutral opalescents, popular colours and frequently used came profiles.
