It is which glass will fire together cleanly, suit your design, and behave predictably in your kiln.

For fused work, glass choice is a technical decision as much as a creative one. Colour, transparency and surface interest matter, but compatibility, thickness and manufacturer consistency matter just as much. Getting those basics right saves disappointment, wasted material and a lot of second-guessing.

How to choose fusible glass for reliable results

The first thing to check is whether the glass is actually made for kilnforming. Not all art glass is fusible, and not all beautiful sheet glass belongs in a fused panel, bowl or jewellery blank. Stained glass and cathedral glass may be visually tempting, but if it has not been produced and tested as a compatible fusible range, it should not be assumed safe to fire together.

That is where many beginners come unstuck. They see two glasses with a similar label or a similar coefficient of expansion and assume they can be mixed. Most fusible sheet glass is made in a standard thickness intended to work predictably in kilnforming. That consistency matters. If you mix materials with noticeably different thicknesses, the finished piece may not move and level out the way you expect.

This becomes especially relevant in tack fusing, contour fusing and slumping. A heavier element may retain more texture, while a thinner one may soften or spread faster. Decorative additions such as stringers, noodles and frit also affect the final surface and edge profile.

For simple full-fuse work, aim for balanced construction. If one area is built up far more heavily than another, you may end up with uneven thickness, distortion or weak spots. Pattern and composition are part of the engineering, not just the decoration.

Surface texture and iridised finishes need planning

Some fusible glasses include surface treatments or textures that can create striking results, but they are not always straightforward. Iridised coatings, for example, can change depending on whether they face up or down, and some effects are reduced or altered during firing.

Textured surfaces can also trap air differently or leave a different finish after firing than you expect from the raw sheet. If a finish is central to the design, it is worth testing a small sample first rather than committing a full sheet.

That is particularly true for production work or commissions. A quick test tile can tell you more than a product description ever will.

Match the glass to the project

A jewellery cabochon, a bowl blank and a wall panel do not ask the same things of the glass. Project type should shape your choice.

For jewellery and small decorative work, bold contrast, dense colour and compatibility with embellishments are usually key. For larger panels, you may care more about how the glass carries light, whether colours muddy when layered, and how much movement occurs in a full fuse. For slumped forms, you also need to think ahead to the second firing. Some combinations that look excellent in a flat fuse may read quite differently once curved.

Beginners often buy on colour alone and only later realise they needed a transparent base, a powder-friendly surface, or a glass that would hold shape in a tack fuse. It helps to decide your firing goal first. Are you going for a smooth full fuse, a textured tack fuse, or a slumped form? Choose the glass with that destination in mind.

The most common mistake is mixing non-compatible glass. The second is assuming all glass in a studio stash is safe to use together because it looks similar. Old offcuts, inherited stock and unidentified scraps are risky in fused work unless they have been clearly sorted and labelled.

Another frequent issue is choosing colours without considering how they react in layers. A transparent red over an opaque white may read completely differently from that same red over clear. Reaction-prone combinations can also produce dark lines or shifts that are either desirable or unwanted, depending on your design.

Then there is scale. A colour that looks rich in a sample square can become overpowering in a large panel. Likewise, a subtle tint may disappear once spread across a bigger piece. Sample tiles are not glamorous, but they are one of the smartest habits a fuser can build.
