A leadlight panel can look completely different when the same pattern is made in different glass. Change a pale cathedral for an opalescent sheet and the room loses some light but gains privacy. Choose a deeply textured glass for a small border and the line may become difficult to read. If you are asking what glass works for leadlighting, the short answer is that most art glass made for stained glass construction can work - provided you choose it for the panel’s location, scale and intended effect.

Leadlighting is not simply about finding attractive colours. Glass needs to cut reliably, suit the width and shape of the pieces, sit comfortably in lead came, and perform well where it will be installed. A good selection balances all of those considerations.

What glass works for leadlighting?

Traditional leadlighting commonly uses art glass in sheets around 3 mm thick. Cathedral glass, opalescent glass, streaky glass, wispy glass, mottled glass and many textures are all suitable. The best option depends on whether the panel needs to transmit clear light, provide privacy, create a strong colour statement or complement an existing window.

Glass intended for stained glass is generally the practical starting point because its thickness and surface are made with cutting and lead came construction in mind. Brands and handmade ranges can vary slightly in thickness, texture and sheet character, so it is worth allowing for variation when planning a detailed pattern.

For a first panel, choose glass that is reasonably consistent in thickness and not excessively textured. You will be able to concentrate on accurate cutting, fitting and cementing rather than wrestling with difficult material. As your confidence grows, stronger textures and more varied handmade sheets become valuable design tools rather than obstacles.

Choose glass by the light you want

The light behind a leadlight is as much a material as the glass itself. Before selecting colours, consider where the panel will sit and whether it will be backlit by full sun, a shaded verandah, a garden or indoor light.

Cathedral glass for bright, transparent colour

Cathedral glass is translucent coloured glass. It lets light through clearly, although surface texture may soften the view. It is a classic choice for coloured borders, geometric panels, flowers and feature sections where you want colour to glow.

Lighter cathedral colours can appear almost clear in a strongly lit window, while dense reds, blues and purples can become very dark in a dim hallway. Hold samples up to a similar light source before committing to a large area. A colour that looks rich on the bench may need a paler companion in the finished panel.

Cathedral glass is also useful when a panel needs to retain daylight. For sidelights and fanlights, it can provide colour without making the entry noticeably darker.

Opalescent glass for privacy and softer light

Opalescent glass contains white or milky colour that diffuses light. It is ideal for bathrooms, front doors and internal screens where privacy matters. It can also give traditional floral and pictorial work a softer, more painterly appearance.

The trade-off is reduced transparency. A heavily opalescent sheet may look beautiful when held to the light but can read as a solid pale shape from a distance. Use it where that softness is wanted, and combine it with transparent glass if the design needs more sparkle or depth.

Streaky, wispy and mottled glass for movement

Streaky and wispy glasses combine colours within one sheet, while mottled glass introduces clouds, density shifts or tonal variation. These are particularly effective for leaves, water, skies, feathers and decorative background fields. They save a panel from looking flat without adding more lead lines.

Direction matters. Turn the piece before cutting to see whether the streaks support the form. A vertical sweep may suit an iris leaf; a horizontal movement may better suggest water. Mark the preferred orientation on the glass before you begin cutting, especially if the pattern has mirrored sections.

Texture is functional as well as decorative

Textured glass can obscure an unwanted view, scatter harsh light and add visual interest to plain geometric work. Popular choices include waterglass, glue chip, hammered, reeded, granite and other rolled textures. Each creates a different degree of distortion.

Fine textures are usually easier to use across small pieces. Large, bold texture can become visually busy in a detailed pattern, but it is excellent in broad background sections or simple door panels. Think about the viewing distance: what looks subtle at arm’s length can be very pronounced across a narrow foyer.

Texture can also affect cutting. Some deeply rolled or irregular sheets require firmer, more deliberate scoring and sensible breaking technique. Cut on the smoother side where possible, keep your cutter wheel clean, and avoid trying to force a score that has not run properly. A good glass cutter and accurate pattern fit make a genuine difference here.

Match the glass to the lead came

Most leadlight glass is compatible with standard lead came, but thickness variations deserve attention. Glass that is too thin may sit loosely in the channel; glass that is unusually thick may be difficult to fit without distorting the lead or stressing the piece.

This is most noticeable when mixing glass types in one panel. A smooth machine-rolled cathedral sheet may be more even than a heavily textured handmade glass. That does not mean they cannot be used together. It means you should test-fit representative pieces in the chosen came before cutting the full panel.

For very fine detail, select glass that can be cut cleanly into small shapes. Thick, highly textured or strongly rippled material may be better reserved for larger pieces. Narrow points, tight inside curves and tiny diamonds are demanding enough without adding difficult glass to the equation.

Consider the panel’s location and purpose

An internal decorative panel has different demands from an exterior door or a large traditional window. For a panel exposed to weather, movement or regular door vibration, sound construction and appropriate reinforcement are just as important as the glass selection. Avoid designing large unsupported areas simply because a particular sheet deserves to be seen in one piece.

Privacy panels benefit from opalescent and textured glass, but remember that night-time lighting reverses the effect. A textured panel may obscure detail during the day while still revealing silhouettes when the room is lit after dark. Where privacy is critical, choose more opaque material or consider the panel’s position carefully.

For heritage repairs, matching the existing glass often matters more than choosing the most dramatic sheet. Look for similar colour density, surface texture, transparency and distortion. Handmade variation is part of the character of older leadlights, so a close visual match is often more successful than a technically identical modern product.

Glass that needs extra care

Not every glass sheet on a studio shelf belongs in a traditional leadlight panel. Fusing glass is made for kiln work and should be selected according to its own compatibility requirements when it will be fused with other glass. Its coefficient of expansion, usually described as COE, is relevant to kiln-forming but does not make it automatically better for leadlighting.

You can use a single unfused piece of many glass types in lead came construction if its physical thickness and cutting behaviour are suitable. However, do not assume different fusing glasses can be combined in a kiln merely because they look good together. Keep leadlighting decisions and fusing compatibility decisions separate.

Dichroic glass, iridised surfaces and very heavily textured sheets can make striking leadlight accents, but use them with purpose. Surface coatings can be scratched during handling, and intense reflection may overpower adjacent glass. A small feature often has more impact than a whole panel of it.

Avoid ordinary window glass for coloured leadlight work unless you understand its limitations. It may be useful for certain repairs or clear sections, but it lacks the colour, texture and visual character of specialist art glass. It can also cut and break differently from rolled art glass, so do not treat it as a direct substitute.

A practical way to select your glass

Start with the pattern and identify the panel’s job: colour, privacy, light control or restoration. Then choose the dominant glass first, because it establishes the overall brightness and mood. Add contrasting glass for borders, focal points and small details rather than selecting every piece independently.

Lay candidate sheets beside one another and view them upright with light behind them. Check the colours in daylight, not only under workshop lighting. If possible, place a small offcut in the actual window location. This simple test can prevent a dark panel in a shaded entry or a washed-out design in hard Queensland sun.
