A leadlight panel rarely goes wrong because someone chose the wrong shade of glass. More often, the trouble begins at the bench: a blunt cutter, lightweight horseshoe nails, a soldering iron that cannot hold heat, or no safe way to contain lead dust. This leadlighting tools checklist covers the equipment that supports sound traditional construction from your first small panel through to regular studio work.

The aim is not to buy every specialised item at once. A well-chosen core kit will let you cut accurately, assemble tightly, solder reliably and finish work properly. Add the more specialised tools when the size, complexity and volume of your projects justify them.

Leadlighting tools checklist: the essential bench

Start with a solid, level work surface. A sheet of smooth plywood or MDF laid over a sturdy table is suitable, provided it is flat and large enough for your usual work. You need room around the pattern for glass, lead came and tools, rather than balancing materials at the edge of the bench.

Your core toolkit should include:

  • A quality glass cutter, ideally with a comfortable handle and replaceable cutting head or cutting wheel.
  • Running pliers and grozing pliers for controlled breaks and nibbling small amounts from an edge.
  • A glass grinder with suitable grinding heads for refining difficult shapes and removing sharp, uneven edges.
  • A straightedge, steel rule, set square and tape measure for setting out and checking the panel.
  • A marking pen suitable for glass, plus a fine permanent marker for came and pattern notes.
  • Horseshoe nails or glazing nails, a small hammer, and timber stops or battens to hold the panel square during assembly.
  • Lead knives, side cutters or came cutters dedicated to cutting lead came cleanly.
  • A soldering iron with adequate wattage, a stand, solder, flux and a small flux brush.
  • A fid or flat-bladed tool for opening lead channels and settling glass into the came.
  • A stiff brush, whiting or another suitable cleaning medium, black cement, and tools for cementing.
  • Safety glasses, disposable gloves, a fitted particulate mask for dusty tasks, and a dedicated apron or work clothes.
That list looks long, but several items are modest workshop staples. The tools worth buying carefully are the cutter, grinder, soldering iron and lead-cutting tools. They are used repeatedly, and poor performance in any one of them can make otherwise straightforward work frustrating.

Cutting glass accurately starts before the cutter

A glass cutter does not slice through glass. It scores the surface, creating a controlled weakness that allows the glass to break along the line. This is why a consistent score matters more than pressing as hard as possible. A good cutter should feel smooth in the hand and produce a clean, even score rather than a shower of chips.

Keep cutter oil in the tool if it is designed for oil feed, and replace a worn head before it begins producing ragged scores. Experienced makers often have more than one cutter style because the best grip depends on hand comfort and the work being done. For a first kit, choose the style you can guide confidently against a straightedge.

Running pliers are especially helpful when learning. They apply even pressure either side of a score and reduce the temptation to force a break with your hands. Grozing pliers are different: use them to remove tiny unwanted projections, not to rescue a badly cut shape. If an edge is only slightly irregular, a grinder is usually the cleaner answer.

The grinder earns its place on detailed work

A grinder is not a substitute for accurate cutting, but it is invaluable for curves, tight inside corners and final fitting. It lets you bring each piece to the pattern line while removing sharp edges that can catch in the lead channel. Use water correctly, keep the sponge or coolant system working, and wear eye protection.

Choose grinding head sizes to suit the work. A standard head handles most pieces; a smaller head is useful for intricate work and tighter curves. Do not grind away large errors just because the machine can do it. Excessive grinding changes the shape, wastes time and can leave a poor fit between glass and came.

Tools for leading up a panel

Traditional leadlighting is a measured construction process. The pattern, glass thickness, lead came profile and border all influence the final dimensions. Accurate measuring tools and a proper layout system are therefore not optional extras.

Use a steel rule rather than a flexible tape measure for close work, and check corners with a set square as you build. A slight error at the first corner can become a noticeable twist by the time you reach the opposite side of a larger panel. Keep your full-size cartoon protected beneath clear film or tracing paper so cement and flux do not damage it.

Horseshoe nails are preferred because their shape holds the came securely while allowing adjustment. They should brace the work, not crush the lead. Place them close enough to control the panel but avoid driving them so tightly that the lead buckles. Timber battens can be useful for long, straight boundaries and repeated work, although nails alone are more flexible for one-off panels.

Lead came cutters or lead knives need to make square, tidy cuts. A crushed or angled cut leaves gaps that require excessive solder and can throw the panel out of line. Side cutters can work for smaller came profiles, but purpose-made cutting tools give more consistent results, particularly with heavier came.

A fid is one of the simplest and most useful tools on the bench. It opens the channel of the came, helps ease glass into place and can gently settle joints before soldering. Wooden, plastic or bone fids are kinder to both the lead and glass than improvised metal tools.

Soldering equipment that holds heat

For leadlight work, use a soldering iron with enough thermal capacity to heat a lead joint quickly without prolonged contact. An underpowered iron encourages you to dwell too long, which can distort the came, crack heat-sensitive glass or leave a dull, weak joint. The exact wattage depends on the iron design and your usual work, but a quality temperature-controlled iron is a sensible investment for regular makers.

Keep the iron tip clean and properly tinned. A dark, pitted tip transfers heat poorly. Use a secure iron stand, keep the lead clear of the hot tip, and never leave a live iron where it can catch a cord, pattern or offcut.

You will also need solder and flux suited to stained glass work. Flux cleans the joint so solder can flow, but it is corrosive residue if left behind. Apply only enough with a small brush, solder one face of the panel at a time, then clean thoroughly. The goal is a smooth, modest bead that bridges the joint, not a large mound of solder covering an inaccurate cut.

Ventilation deserves planning. Soldering creates fumes from flux, while lead work can leave residue on hands and surfaces. Work in a ventilated area, position extraction where practical, wash hands before eating or drinking, and keep food and cups out of the workshop. Sweep-up methods that throw dust into the air are best avoided; use damp wiping and appropriate cleaning practices instead.

Cementing and finishing tools are part of the build

A panel is not finished when the joints are soldered. Cementing fills the space between glass and came, firms the panel, improves weather resistance and gives traditional leadlight its finished appearance. Skipping it may seem convenient on a decorative indoor piece, but the panel will be less stable and the lead channels will look unfinished.

Black cement is worked under the leaf of the came using a stiff brush or similar tool. The process is deliberately messy, so protect the bench and allow enough time. Once the cement has begun to firm, whiting helps draw out excess oil and makes it easier to clean the glass and lead. A separate stiff brush for whiting, rags and a scraper or cleaning tool will make this stage much more manageable.

Polishing comes after the panel is clean and fully finished. Use products appropriate to lead came and follow their handling directions. A good finish should enhance the lead without leaving residue across textured glass or in corners.

Buy for the work you are actually making

A beginner making small suncatchers or simple square panels can begin with the essential kit and build skills before adding specialist equipment. A maker producing large windows, zinc-framed panels or restoration work may need heavier-duty cutters, multiple grinder heads, stronger bench support, lead dykes, glazing tools and better fume extraction.

There are also choices driven by your construction method. Copper foil work shares the cutter, grinder and soldering tools, but replaces lead came tools with foil shears, burnishers and foil dispensers. Fused glass makers may use some of the same preparation tools, yet need to consider kiln equipment, kiln paper and glass compatibility separately. Buying for the wrong process is an easy and expensive mistake.

For Australian makers, it is worth allowing for consumables in the initial order. Solder, flux, cutting oil, grinder coolant accessories, replacement heads, nails, cement and whiting do not last forever. Keeping sensible spares means a weekend project does not stop over one worn grinder head or an empty bottle of flux.

Set up the bench so the tools you reach for most are easy to return to the same place. That small habit protects your glass, keeps lead residue contained and lets your attention stay where it belongs: on clean lines, tight joins and a panel you will be proud to see in the light.
