A beautiful fused piece can lose its appeal quickly if it drapes unevenly over a mould, picks up an unwanted texture, or cracks after firing. Fused glass slumping is the controlled process of reheating a previously fused blank until it softens and takes the shape of a kiln mould. It is how flat glass becomes a bowl, plate, platter, spoon rest, jewellery dish or sculptural form.

The key word is controlled. Slumping is not simply a matter of putting a fused blank over a mould and firing until it drops. Glass has its own timing, and the result depends on compatible materials, the weight and thickness of the blank, the mould profile, kiln behaviour and a properly managed annealing cycle.

Plan the form before you make the blank

The most reliable slumping projects begin at the design stage. Think about the final object before cutting glass for the initial fuse. A shallow 250 mm platter needs a different blank from a deep bowl. A form with a tight curve or narrow foot may need more glass around the edge, while a piece intended to sit on a drop-out mould needs enough overhang to fall evenly.

Measure the mould and allow for the glass to move. For a drape mould, the blank generally needs to be larger than the top opening so it can descend around the outside. For a drop-out mould, the blank must cover the opening with enough excess glass to create the desired depth. The exact allowance depends on the mould shape, the glass thickness and how far you intend the glass to drop.

Avoid placing detailed focal work where it will distort around a curve. Straight lines can bend, circles can become oval, and carefully arranged stringers may spread apart as the surface stretches. That movement is not a fault - it can be part of the design - but it should be anticipated. If a pattern needs to remain precise, choose a shallower form or position the detail in the flatter central area.

Choose glass that can be fused and slumped together

All glasses in a fused blank must be tested compatible. Matching the stated COE is a useful starting point, but it is not a universal guarantee across brands, colours or glass types. Use glass from a tested compatible system, such as a single manufacturer’s kiln-forming range, and be especially careful when adding scraps, frit, stringers, rods or dichroic glass from an unknown source.

Compatibility problems are often invisible when the kiln is cool. A piece may look perfect after firing, then develop a crack weeks later because internal stress remains. This is why a simple compatibility test is worthwhile whenever you are combining materials you have not used together before.

For most small functional work, a fused blank around 6 mm thick is a sound starting point. It is substantial enough to behave predictably, yet not so heavy that it becomes difficult to control. Very thin blanks can distort readily and may have sharp, fragile rims. Thicker constructions need more consideration: they require slower heating and annealing, and can retain heat long after the kiln display suggests the job is finished.

Transparent, opalescent and textured glasses all slump differently in appearance. A smooth, fully fused blank will produce a clean surface, while a contour fuse may retain texture that becomes more pronounced as it stretches. If using textured glass, consider which side faces the mould. Texture against the mould can transfer or flatten; texture facing up can remain more visible, depending on the firing and form.

Prepare the mould, not just the kiln

Mould choice determines much of the finished result. Ceramic and stainless-steel moulds are common, each with their own working methods. Ceramic forms need an effective separator, applied evenly and allowed to dry properly. Stainless forms may also require an appropriate release product, particularly where glass will touch the metal for an extended period.

Never assume a mould is ready because it was prepared for a previous firing. Examine it for worn areas, flakes, fingerprints, kiln wash dust and any place where glass could make direct contact. A patchy separator can leave a stubborn mould mark or cause glass to stick. Too much product can create a rough underside, so the aim is an even, thin protective surface rather than a heavy coating.

Place the mould on a stable, level kiln shelf with enough clearance above it. Check that the lid, elements and thermocouple will not interfere with taller forms. A small tilt in the shelf can be enough to leave a bowl visibly uneven, especially with a soft glass and a long hold.

For shallow forms, a drape mould is often forgiving and produces a graceful rolled edge. Drop-out moulds can create deeper bowls but demand more attention because the glass can continue moving quickly once it reaches the right temperature. Ring moulds, stainless bands and handmade refractory forms expand the possibilities, though they also introduce more variables. Start with a simple commercial mould while learning how your kiln responds.

Firing fused glass slumping with purpose

A slumping firing is usually lower than the temperature used to full fuse glass. The aim is to soften the blank enough for gravity to do the shaping, without erasing every surface detail or causing the glass to overrun the mould. The correct top temperature and hold time vary between glass systems, kiln size, mould material, blank thickness and the type of form.

This is why a published schedule should be treated as a starting point, not a promise. A top-loading kiln may fire differently from a front-loader. One kiln may reach the desired movement with a brief hold, while another needs a slightly higher temperature or more time. Record what happens in your own kiln: the glass used, blank dimensions, mould, schedule, weather conditions if relevant, and the final shape. Those notes become more useful than any generic chart.

A typical slumping programme has several purposes. It heats the piece gradually enough to reduce thermal shock, moves through the working range at a controlled pace, holds only as long as needed for the form to develop, then returns to the annealing range before cooling slowly through the strain point. The annealing stage is not optional housekeeping. It gives the glass time to equalise in temperature and release stress.

Do not be tempted to open the kiln early to check progress. A quick look can cause thermal shock, particularly when the piece is hot and under stress around curves. If your kiln has a viewing port, use it cautiously and only when your kiln manufacturer’s guidance permits. Better still, make test pieces and learn the schedule before committing a detailed one-off design.

Overfiring produces familiar problems: rims become too thin, glass pools at the bottom of a drop-out mould, patterns stretch beyond recognition, or the piece picks up excessive mould texture. Underfiring leaves a blank that has barely moved, with stiff shoulders or an uneven profile. Both outcomes are useful information. Adjust one factor at a time on the next firing, rather than changing temperature, hold and ramp rate all at once.

Heatwork matters more than one number

Glass responds to heatwork - the combined effect of temperature and time. A lower peak temperature with a longer hold can sometimes create a similar form to a higher temperature with a shorter hold, but the surface quality may differ. A longer hold also increases the chance of detail softening or the glass moving too far.

For this reason, use the lowest practical temperature and shortest practical hold that achieve the desired shape. This approach gives you more control and helps preserve the character built into the original fused blank.

Handle rims, feet and finishing carefully

Once the kiln has cooled to room temperature, inspect the piece before declaring it finished. Check that it sits flat, that the rim is even and touch-safe, and that no separator residue remains on the underside. A slight wobble may be corrected with coldworking, but a significantly uneven base can make a functional piece frustrating to use.

Sharp edges should be coldworked rather than ignored. A diamond hand pad can soften a minor edge, while a grinder or lap may be needed for more substantial correction. After grinding, clean the glass thoroughly. Depending on the finish required, a brief fire polish may restore lustre, but remember that another firing can change the shape again.

Functional pieces deserve extra judgement. A shallow dish intended for wrapped lollies has different demands from a platter intended to carry food or a bowl that will be washed regularly. Keep bases stable, rims comfortable to handle, and avoid forms that invite a heavy load on a thin unsupported section.

Build confidence with small, repeatable tests

The fastest way to improve is to make a series of deliberate tests using one mould and one glass system. Try the same blank size at slightly different holds, or compare smooth and textured surfaces over the same form. This reveals how your kiln and materials behave without risking a large, intricate panel.
