Curved rods can soften a design, but if the bend is under tension before firing, the piece may settle in a way you did not anticipate. Short cut lengths often give the most control for repeat patterning, especially in jewellery or small format work.
It also pays to think about edge distance. Rods placed too close to the edge of a base piece can pull the outline out of shape as they soften. That is not always a fault - sometimes it is exactly the effect a maker wants - but it should be deliberate. If you need a clean finished edge, leave enough room for the rod to move.
When layering rods over other elements, keep the stack in mind. A rod over sheet is simple enough. A rod over frit, powder or multiple cut components can behave less predictably because the support underneath is uneven. Test pieces save a lot of disappointment here.
