A beautiful kiln firing can still fail at the most frustrating point: the cool-down. A panel that looked perfect through the kiln window may crack days later because two glasses expanded at different rates. Choosing fusible glass sheets is therefore not simply a matter of finding the right colour. Compatibility, opacity, surface texture and the intended firing schedule all affect the finished piece.

For kiln-formed work, the glass is both your palette and your structure. Starting with a compatible, well-understood sheet glass range gives you more control over whether your work slumps cleanly, holds its shape, develops the colour you expected and survives annealing without stress.

What makes glass suitable for fusing?

Fusible glass is manufactured and tested to work with other glasses from the same compatible system. It is commonly identified by its coefficient of expansion, or COE. This figure describes how much the glass expands when heated and contracts as it cools. Glasses with different expansion rates can create internal stress, even where the colours and textures appear similar.

In practice, COE 90 and COE 96 are the systems most glass fusers will encounter. Bullseye glass is generally <a href="/collections/bullseye-non-fusible-copy">COE 90</a>, while Oceanside Compatible glass is <a href="/collections/oceanside-opal-fusible">COE 96</a>. COE is a useful starting point, not a complete guarantee. Compatibility is based on tested batch behaviour, rather than the number alone. For dependable results, use glass from the same manufacturer and compatible range, including frit, powder, stringers, rods and dichroic glass. If you are bringing an unfamiliar product into a project, a small test firing is sensible before committing a larger piece of glass.

Selecting fusible glass sheets for the result you want

Begin with the firing process. A tack fuse, full fuse, contour fuse and slump each place different demands on the glass. A sheet that is ideal for a crisp, layered tack-fused design may flow much more than expected at full-fuse temperatures.

Colour is affected by heat and thickness

Kiln heat changes some colours more noticeably than others. Transparent glasses can become richer where they overlap, while opalescent sheets may soften or spread visually at a full fuse. Dense reds, oranges and striking reactive glasses can need particularly careful testing when layered or fired against another colour.

Consider the total thickness of the finished work, not just the appearance of a single sheet. Two layers of transparent glass will generally look deeper and darker than one. This can be a strength in jewellery, cabochons and small panels, but it may make fine detail disappear in a larger composition.

If you need a very specific result, make a sample tile using the same layering, inclusions and firing schedule planned for the final work. Label it with the glass codes and firing details. A small sample library soon becomes one of the most useful tools in a kiln-forming studio.

Transparent, opalescent and streaky sheets behave differently

Keep test samples of known reactions and record the direction of the layering as well as the firing temperature.

Texture needs a firing plan

Textured glass has an immediate visual appeal, but its surface will change as heatwork increases. At a low tack fuse, texture may remain clear and tactile. At a full fuse, much of it can soften or disappear as the glass seeks a smoother surface. A deep texture may also trap small air pockets when capped with another sheet.

This does not mean textured glass should be avoided. It means the design needs to account for it. Use texture where retained relief is part of the intent, allow sufficient air to escape from enclosed areas, and test any combination that will be heavily layered. For mould work, consider which side of the glass will face up after slumping, as the chosen surface can change the way reflected light reads across the finished form.

Sheet size, thickness and cutting considerations

Most fusible sheet glass is supplied in a standard thickness suitable for building two-layer work. A two-layer construction is often a practical target for a full-fused panel because it gives an even foundation and helps reduce uneven edges. Very thin areas next to thicker stacks can create distortion, devitrification risks or an irregular finish, depending on the firing schedule.

Cutting remains a fundamental skill. Score cleanly and confidently, then break the sheet with controlled pressure. Excessive re-scoring weakens the edge and can produce unpredictable breaks. Curves and narrow internal cuts need patience, suitable running pliers and an acceptance that some shapes are better refined cold after firing than forced from the sheet in one attempt.

Before cutting an expensive glass, inspect both sides. One face may have a more appealing texture, a clearer streak pattern or a surface that will suit your design better. Mark the intended top surface with a removable label or wax pencil. It is easy to reverse a piece during assembly, particularly when working with transparent or subtly textured glass.

Build for clean firing and reliable annealing

Good glass choices can be undone by avoidable workshop contamination. Clean every piece before assembly, particularly if it has been handled repeatedly, marked, ground or stored near powders. Fingerprints, dust, grinding residue and certain shelf contaminants can leave marks that only become obvious after firing.

Use kiln paper, fibre paper or an appropriate shelf preparation for the effect and firing temperature you are aiming for. The support material is not merely there to protect the shelf. It influences the underside of the glass, can leave texture, and has temperature limitations that need to be respected.

Assembly should be stable enough to move into the kiln without disturbing the design. Avoid creating sealed pockets of air between large sheets. Where an enclosed design cannot be avoided, consider ways for air to vent at an edge, or adjust the construction and schedule to reduce the chance of bubbles.

Annealing is where patience protects your work. The thicker and more complex the piece, the more carefully the annealing soak and cool-down need to be considered. A standard schedule may suit a small, evenly built tile but not a thick sculptural form, dense cast element or panel with substantial variation in thickness. When in doubt, err on the side of a longer anneal and slower cooling through the critical range.

Buying glass with fewer surprises
