It is a considered material system, particularly for kiln-forming artists who need dependable compatibility, as well as stained glass makers who value distinctive surface, density and light transmission.

For Australian makers, it also sits at a premium end of the market. That makes the question less about whether Bullseye is “good” and more about whether it suits your process, design style and budget. For many serious fusers, the answer is yes. For some leadlighters, mosaic artists and beginners, the better answer may be a selective mix of Bullseye and other sheet glass.

Bullseye glass review: the short verdict

Bullseye is widely respected because its compatible kiln-forming glass is manufactured as a tested system rather than a collection of unrelated sheets with similar expansion numbers. Its COE 90 range offers an exceptional colour palette, including transparent, opalescent, streaky, iridised and speciality glasses, supported by frits, powders, stringers, rods and accessory glass designed for kiln work.

The main strengths are colour quality, consistency across compatible product families and the sheer creative range available to a fuser. The trade-off is price, plus the fact that some of its most beautiful sheets need thoughtful cutting, layering and firing. Dense opalescents, heavily streaked glass, iridised surfaces and reactive combinations can all behave differently from a straightforward transparent sheet.

For leadlighting and copper foil work, Bullseye can be superb where its particular colour, texture or hand-rolled character is the right design choice. It is not always the most economical option for a large background field, nor is every sheet the easiest choice for a tight, intricate pattern.

Why Bullseye has such a strong reputation

The defining feature of Bullseye’s kiln-forming range is compatibility. COE 90 refers to a nominal coefficient of expansion, but matching a COE number alone does not guarantee that two glasses will fire safely together. Compatibility is affected by the full glass formulation and how materials respond through heating and cooling.

Bullseye’s compatible products are formulated and tested to work together within its system. That gives fusers a reliable starting point when combining sheet glass with frit, powder, stringer, confetti and other compatible components. It reduces guesswork, which matters when a piece has taken hours to cut, compose and fire.

That reliability does not remove the need for sound kiln practice. A thick piece still requires an appropriate annealing schedule. Uneven construction can still create stress. A very large project, or a design with dense inclusions and abrupt changes in thickness, may need slower heating and cooling than a small test tile. The glass system supports good practice, but it cannot replace it.

Bullseye also has a visual character that many makers recognise immediately. Colours tend to feel deliberate rather than generic, and the range encourages considered combinations. A transparent teal over a pale opal, a warm amber beside deep violet, or a restrained neutral field with a single strong accent can all carry real depth after firing.

Colour, transparency and texture in the studio

A glass catalogue image is useful, but it is only part of the story. Hold a sheet to the light and you may see a different density, movement or colour balance than you expected. This is especially true of hand-rolled and streaky glasses, where variation is part of the appeal.

Transparent glass

Bullseye transparent sheets are a strong choice for work that depends on transmitted light. They suit kiln-formed panels, layered landscape work, jewellery and architectural details, as well as selected leadlight panels. When layered, transparent glass often gains richness quickly, so it is wise to make small tests before committing to a large composition.

Some transparent colours can look relatively light as a single layer but become much deeper in two layers. That is useful when you want visual depth, but it can surprise makers who are expecting the colour seen in a single sheet.

Opalescent and streaky glass

Opalescent Bullseye glass offers a more painterly, light-scattering result. It can be ideal for floral work, figurative pieces, landscapes and designs needing visual privacy. In leadlight, it often makes a feature panel feel substantial even when viewed against a bright Queensland window.

Streaky and mixed-colour sheets are where Bullseye becomes particularly expressive. No two areas of a sheet necessarily read the same way, so the placement of each cut piece matters. Before cutting, move your pattern shapes over the glass and choose the sections that carry the most useful movement. A few minutes at this stage can make the finished work feel intentional rather than accidental.

Speciality surfaces

Iridised glass, reactive glasses and speciality surface treatments can produce striking results, but they reward testing. Iridescent coatings may change appearance depending on whether they are fired face-up or face-down, and can lose their original surface character in certain firings. Reactive glass combinations may create dark lines, halos or colour shifts where one glass meets another.

These effects are not faults when used knowingly. They are part of the vocabulary of kiln-formed glass. The practical approach is to label tests, record the firing schedule and keep a small reference board of successful combinations.

Cutting and handling considerations

Bullseye is handmade glass, and that is visible in the sheet. Some glass is relatively smooth and cuts cleanly into conventional shapes. Other sheets have pronounced texture, thicker areas, soft edges or a more irregular surface. Those characteristics are valuable artistically, but they influence how you work.

Use a sharp, suitable glass cutter and score with steady pressure rather than forcing a deep score. Textured glass is generally easiest to score from the smoother side where possible. Breaker-groziers, running pliers and careful support under the score are often more useful than extra force.

For copper foiling, allow for the surface profile of the glass. A deeply textured sheet can require patient foiling so the copper adheres properly around uneven edges. For lead came work, check that each piece will sit comfortably in the chosen channel, especially if the glass varies in thickness. These are ordinary workshop considerations, not reasons to avoid the material.

Is Bullseye worth the price?

For kiln-forming, Bullseye is often worth the investment when compatibility and colour control matter. It is particularly sensible for commissioned work, repeatable product lines, teaching projects and designs where a firing failure would be costly. The supporting compatible range also makes it practical to develop a piece from sheet glass through to detailed powder work without switching systems.

For a beginner, the cost can feel daunting. The answer is not necessarily to avoid Bullseye, but to buy with a purpose. Start with a restrained palette of clear, white, black and a few colours you genuinely use. Add frits or stringers only when a project calls for them. Small offcuts are excellent for sample tiles, cabochons, mosaic details and testing reactions.

For stained glass and leadlight work, value depends more heavily on the design. A Bullseye feature border, focal flower or richly textured sky may justify the spend, while a broad area of single-colour background glass may be better sourced from another suitable range. There is no virtue in using premium glass where it does not improve the finished panel.

Choosing the right Bullseye glass for your project

Begin with the making process. If the project will be fused, stay within a tested compatible COE 90 system unless you have independently tested another material combination. Do not assume that glass labelled COE 90 from different manufacturers can be freely combined. Similar expansion figures are not a compatibility guarantee.

Then consider the final viewing conditions. A suncatcher needs enough transparency to come alive in a window. A wall panel may benefit from opalescent density. Jewellery needs colour that remains attractive at a small scale, while a large platter may need pattern and tonal variation that holds attention from a distance.

Finally, consider the role of each glass in the composition. Is it the quiet background, the focal point, a line of contrast or a source of texture? Bullseye’s range can tempt a maker into using too many interesting sheets at once. Often, two or three well-chosen glasses produce a clearer result than a crowded palette.
