If your solder lines are looking grainy, lumpy or dull, the issue is often not your iron - it is the solder itself. Choosing the best solder for stained glass makes a noticeable difference to flow, bead shape, finishing time and the overall strength of the panel.
For most stained glass work, there is no single solder that suits every job. The right choice depends on whether you are working in copper foil or lead came, whether you want high rounded beads or flatter seams, and whether the piece is decorative, structural or handled often. Once you understand what each alloy does, buying solder becomes much simpler.
What makes the best solder for stained glass?
In stained glass, solder is not just a filler. It shapes the look of the finished work and affects how comfortably the job comes together at the bench. A solder that melts and flows well lets you build smooth seams with less reworking. A poor match can leave you chasing ridges, reheating corners and fighting oxidation.
Most traditional stained glass solders are tin and lead alloys. The ratio between those metals changes how the solder behaves. More tin generally gives you a brighter finish and a slightly higher rounded bead. More lead tends to make the solder a little more fluid and economical, but often with a flatter finish.
That is why experienced makers rarely ask only, "What is the best solder?" The more useful question is, "Best for which method, and for what result?"
60/40 solder for stained glass
For many copper foil makers, 60/40 is the best solder for stained glass when a neat, rounded bead matters. This alloy contains 60 per cent tin and 40 per cent lead, and it is widely used in Tiffany-style construction.
The main reason is control. 60/40 flows nicely once the foil is properly burnished and fluxed, but it also holds a bead well enough to give those tidy raised seams many people want on suncatchers, lampshades and decorative panels. It usually leaves a brighter line than 50/50, which can make finishing easier if your soldering technique is already fairly clean.
That said, 60/40 asks for reasonable heat control. If the iron is too cool, the solder can sit on the surface rather than flowing through the seam. If the iron is too hot, you can burn flux quickly and end up with a rougher result than expected. For beginners, it is often an excellent solder to learn with, but only if the rest of the setup is right - suitable iron, fresh flux and well-prepared foil.
50/50 solder for stained glass
If you work in lead came, 50/50 is often the better fit. With equal parts tin and lead, this solder tends to flow more freely and flatten a little more than 60/40. That makes it particularly useful at lead joints where you want the solder to settle into the connection rather than sit up high.
Many studios keep 50/50 on hand for leadlighting work because it wets the joint quickly and can be economical across larger panels. It is also a solid choice for tinning zinc edges and for jobs where a heavily domed bead is not the goal.
This does not mean 50/50 is only for lead came and 60/40 is only for foil. There is overlap. Some foil artists like 50/50 for flatter, more understated seams. Some lead workers prefer 60/40 in areas where appearance matters more than speed. But as a general starting point, 60/40 suits copper foil and 50/50 suits lead came.
What about lead-free solder?
Lead-free solder has its place, especially where makers want to avoid lead in decorative items or in teaching environments with tighter safety requirements. These solders are usually based on tin with small amounts of other metals such as silver or copper.
The trade-off is that lead-free solder often melts at a higher temperature and can behave differently under the iron. Some formulas feel less forgiving, especially for long decorative seams in copper foil. You may need to work more deliberately, keep your tip condition in good order and pay closer attention to heat recovery.
For jewellery, small pieces or projects where lead avoidance is a priority, lead-free can be a sensible choice. For traditional stained glass panels and leadlighting, many makers still prefer classic tin-lead solders because they are easier to run, easier to shape and more familiar in practice.
Choosing solder by construction method
The best solder for stained glass depends heavily on how the piece is built.
Copper foil work
Copper foil needs solder to create both the seam and much of the visual finish. That puts more emphasis on bead quality. In this setting, 60/40 is commonly the preferred option because it gives a smoother, more rounded line with less effort once technique is established.
On smaller decorative pieces, that extra control is worth paying for. If the seam is the line drawing of the piece, the solder needs to look deliberate.
Lead came panels
Lead came uses the lead itself as the structural framework, so the solder is concentrated at the joints rather than running every seam. Here, 50/50 is often ideal because it flows quickly into the joint and creates a secure bond without needing a pronounced raised bead.
For repair work, matching the appearance of older joints can also matter. A flatter solder profile is often more in keeping with traditional leadlighting.
Mixed-material work
Some projects use foil internally and zinc or lead around the perimeter. In those cases, many makers keep more than one solder in the workshop. There is nothing unusual about using 60/40 on the decorative foil seams and 50/50 where a flatter, more flowing joint is more useful.
Flux, iron temperature and clean-up still matter
Even the best solder for stained glass will perform poorly if the supporting materials are not doing their job. A quality flux helps the solder wet the metal properly. If the flux is old, applied unevenly or burned off by too much heat, the solder line suffers straight away.
Iron choice matters just as much. A stained glass iron needs enough thermal capacity to maintain temperature through the seam. If the iron struggles to recover heat, solder can go pasty and uneven. Makers sometimes blame the alloy when the real problem is insufficient heat.
Surface preparation also makes a difference. Copper foil should be firmly burnished and free from oils. Lead joints should be clean and properly fluxed. And after soldering, residue needs to be washed off thoroughly. Leftover flux is one of the quickest ways to spoil a good finish over time.
Finish, patina and appearance
Solder choice affects how the finished line looks before patina and after it. A brighter alloy can make flaws more visible during soldering, but it can also give a cleaner base for finishing. If you use black or copper patina, consistency in the seam becomes more important than raw shine.
This is where technique and solder choice meet. A slightly flatter seam may suit a traditional panel. A higher bead may suit a decorative foil piece with strong linework. Neither is automatically better. The right look depends on the style of work.
If appearance is critical, it is worth testing a small seam first rather than committing to a full project with unfamiliar solder. That is especially true when changing brands or moving to lead-free formulations.

For most makers, the practical answer is straightforward. If you mainly do copper foil stained glass, start with 60/40. If you mainly do lead came and traditional leadlighting, start with 50/50. If you need a lead-free option, be prepared for a different feel under the iron and allow a little time to adjust your method.
If you work across several techniques, it often makes sense to keep both 60/40 and 50/50 in stock. That gives you more control over seam profile, flow and finish, and it reflects the reality of a serious glass workshop.
